Description
A ceremonial spoon made of wood with a dark brown, slightly shiny patina. Two womens legs and pelvis provide a "handle" for the spoon; the female sex is indicated by a slit between the legs. Small amount of damage, cracks and pieces missing from the edge of the scoop.
The spoons are used for important Dan festivals in which gifts of food and money are given. A woman, who is head of an important lineage was chosen as head cook, the spoon indicates her prestige and her ability to prepare an important feast. The spoons are dyed black with river mud and polished with palm leaves.
