Around 50 million people are voodoo believers. Yet of all the religions voodoo is probably the most misunderstood - "superstition" and "black magic" remain the prevalent clichés. The cradle of this animistic nature relgion is the Republic of Benin, West Africa. Photographer Henning Christoph and author Hans Oberländer have researched voodoo and its various cult forms in depth. They witnessed ceremonies in which voodoo initiates, led by music and dance, fell into trance and experienced supernatural powers. In striking colour photographs and evocotive text, they record a dynamic cosmic vision that influences African heads of state, a divination system considerably more complex than the I Ching, moral vigilantes who operate at night, healers who have taken up the campaign against Aids. And they reveal the dark side of voodoo - witchcraft and sorcery.
