Description
Collected in the 1950's in Nigeria.
A female ibeji from the Yoruba in Nigeria. The patina in the face indicates heavy use. The figure is wearing a white dress with blue stripes and is wearing a string of blacks beads around the waist. The lower part of the body has some insect caused damage.
The Kegel-Konitezko collectors number "192-328 Oyo" is written on the base in white paint.

An Ibeji is used as a container for the soul of a dead twin. The Yoruba believe that the souls of twins are connected to each other and the a dead twin must be looked after exactly like a living child in that it is fed, bathed and spoken to.
