| Description |
 |
An impressive old mask form the Baule in the Ivory Coast.
Damage, slight abrasion, as well as damage caused by termites on both sides of the mask. The original collectors label is attached to the back of the mask "147 - Tanzmaske der Baulé - Souro, Elfenbein-Küste". Mounted on metal stand.
The last mask to appear in the course of the "gbagba" masquerade are portraits that represent recognized, named individuals. The men and women portrayed in masks are known for their great skill as dancers, for their exceptional beauty, or because they are important political figures. They represent an ideal in Baule culture typified in this mask.
