Utilitarian objects

Many African peoples decorated utilitarian objects. The Kuba from the DR Congo carved patterns and symbols onto objects such as cups, mortars and combs. The Senufo from the Ivory Coast carved beautiful heddle pulleys for weaving – not used in a ceremonial context they are nevertheless a reminder that functionality and art can complement each other.
