At 137 years old!! the book is in solid good condition. The spine is faded and there is some fading to the front and back boards. Light wear to top of spine, very light wear to bottom of spine and board tips. Inside, chocolate brown endpapers, very light foxing through - out. Pages and binding are tight. Paul Du Chaillu was the first non-native to witness many of the people and animals of Western Africa and this book details many of those encounters. Reading it is like experiencing these first encounters for yourself. Everything is described so well; the food, the customs, the clothes, the camps, the animals and the people. It contains 8 engravings with tissue guards and 25 engravings within the text.
