The Södergren family collection was assembled over a period of almost 60 years. The earliest objects date from around 1920-1930 and were collected by missionary John Södergren. After his death in 1947 his estate was transported in crates to Sweden, and kept by his son Sigfried Södergren.
Sigrid Södergren - artist and painter - was deeply impressed by the objects that he came in contact with and which influenced his artistic work. He toured the Congo several times first on his honeymoon, then at the beginning of the 1950s, and again between 1959 and 1960 and at the beginning of the 1960s.
